CBL Mag 6-25-07 "Frustrated"
 Intro Wow. This shit is beyond frustrating. I mean, I don't even know what to do anymore. The league is down to less than 20 cats, AND the voting is beyond wack. C'mon people. Know that I and G-Rated have better things to do. It takes fuckin' less than five minutes to vote. I've been going easy as far as deducting votes for non-voters but that fuckin' stops today. I'm sick of battles getting 2 or 3 votes. NEW RULE: You MUST vote on champ match AND contendership match. If not, you will be deducted FOUR VOTES. Anyways, an interesting interview with Transgress comes at us later in the mag, so look out for that. Some new sign ins this week including G-Rated. Let's look at the positive. Sureloc vs. Transgress last week was definantly a good battle. So let's move on from the wackness and keep it goin'. MAG TIME.

Battle Overviews Some battles this week got more hype than the Iphone...  ...at least THEY lived up to the hype. Champ Match: 1. Illustration (10-2) vs. 2. Torment (5-5) - Decent matchup. But a sorta shocking outcome. Illustration came in after Torment and dropped rather half-assed, which was a let down. Torment dropped aight. Some cool concepts here and there. In the end, he took it in the voters eyes no question. So, we have a new champ; Torment! Congrats son. Contendership: 3. Sureloc Holmes (7-4) vs. 4. Transgress (8-1) - Very easily the battle of the week. In total, this battle was 60 lines! I don't know if that threw voters off, but there were only 3 votes. Both battlers came out swinging with quotes to back up nasty accusations and personals. In the end, the three voters thought Transgress took it. Trans'll take on Torment in the champ match this week. 5. Tyme Lyne (3-1) vs. 6. Caleb Pratt (2-2) - I didn't like the voting here. Hating Liyah aside, I thought Caleb had actual concepts and actually tried to execute 'em. Liyah had her usual statements. But the voters liked it and that's usually what matters. Liyah won. 7. Area51 (3-2) vs. 8. nostalgia (4-5) - Aight battle here. Area actually came half-way nice. Nostalgia is still slippin'. He was dropping with mad potential a few weeks back. I don't know what happened. But anyways, he came bland and Area took this. 9. Varcity (5-4) vs. 10. Young (1-0) - Varc no showed. 11. koke07 (2-2) vs. 12. scoobykanye (0-1) - This wasn't good here. Both dropped mad weak and need elevation. Scooby used to drop decent, but I don't know what happened. Koke got this easy for harder disses. 13. khalidrocks (1-1) vs. 14. Glo8al (3-6) - Glo no showed for the kajillionth time.

 Battle Predictions Champ: 1. Torment (6-5) vs. 2. Transgress (8-1) - Two completely different styles here. Tor has a more wordplay/pun related verse and Trans has a harsh punchline oriented style. Either way, this'll be interesting and I can honestly say that I wouldn't be suprised if either person pulled out a win. Contendership: 3. Tyme Lyne (4-1) vs. 4. Young (1-0) - I can't believe I'm saying this, but I think Liyah'll win this one. Young just doesn't have the experience here. Tyme is rather wack as well, but yeah, we'll see. I think Tyme has the better chance, but it's a toss up. 5. G-Rated (6-1) vs. 6. koke07 (3-2) - Koke still has to construct a formal punch. G is nice. He knows what he's doing so I got him taking this easily. 7. Sureloc Holmes (7-5) vs. 8. khalidrocks (2-1) - Khalid reminds me of a text version of Canibus. He just tries to cram too much into one line. He has nice ideas though, but has really bad wording troubles. Sureloc is the experienced one here and should take it. 9. Illustration (10-3) vs. 10. Caleb Pratt (2-3) - Ill fell hard. But, it's deserved I think. Dude hasn't been taking his time and doing what I know he can. Caleb is still improving and I think he got robbed last week. But hey, you move on. Ill has experience but if he keeps half-assing, Caleb will pull an upset. 11. scoobykanye (0-2) vs. 12. Mufasa (0-0) - Fasa is aight. His wording needs hella work though. But he's in other leagues and has been doing this longer I think. Scooby just needs to get on track and if he don't, Fasa will make this a landslide. 13. Wyosfinest (0-0) vs. 14. ruivirtual (0-0) vs. 15. Jeanyus (0-0) - Could be interesting. Never seen Wyos battle. Rui is improving alot and Jean is aight, but his style is wack. I got Rui taking this.

This Week's Lesson is...  How do I improve my Wording? Introduction Wording is something that gets better with practice, plain and simple. The object is to word your lines so the main idea gets highlighted in its most concise form. There are several ways this can be accomplished, depending on the need of the line. This tutorial will break down the most crucial concepts of wording for general Scrypt, Topicals, and Battles. General Scrypt Wording Rules #1 Must rhyme and flow #2 Must have a relevant setup #3 Must convey some original idea Everything should have some version of a rhyme scheme to it, for the reader’s sake. Don’t stretch lines and sacrifice flow, you’ve worded a line wrong if it doesn’t read fluently. Sometimes it’s not the syllable count that causes the line to read wrong. Some words have odd accents that technically count as one syllable, but should be counted as two due to how they are spoken. You read scrypt at the pace you would speak at, so it should be written accordingly. Make sure the format of the verse is easy to follow. A paragraph of text that isn’t prose is tiresome to read. In the same light, don’t make someone scroll down for every word. Wherever you want a short pause, use a comma. Wherever you want a long, deliberate pause, break the line. Look at a few people’s scrypt and do a format within the boundaries of similar. Don’t use color, bold, or weird symbols. Don’t hyphenate multis, or try to be over-creative with the format… be creative with the words. Wording in Battles… When battling, every bar should disrespect your opponent. When you diss someone, it’s called a punch. Punches come in many different forms, but how they are worded defines them as vicious or soft. If you keep hearing “dope concept, but badly worded,” then this is for you. When you flip a punch, you want a concept to start from. You take the concept and twist it into something clever that disrespects your opponent, then rhyme it basic. Go back and tinker with the wording until you get something you're happy with. You don't want to give away the punch too soon, but you want every line you write to have a purpose; it's a balance game. Wording a Punch I. Get a concept This will be the core of the punch. Personal punches tend to do the most damage, but since you’ve never met most of the opponents you will face (and trust that the voters haven’t either), they are rather scarce. Ignorant voters overlook dope personals at times if you get TOO personal, note this. Clowning an opponent is always classic if it’s original. A dope wordplay punch will hit the hardest of the non-personalized group. Imagery, Metaphors, Similes, etc., will get the job done. They just don’t do as much damage unless it’s a fresh flip. What doesn’t do any damage is a line dedicated to how good you are, and if you’re going to write a horrible closer, just use another punch. e.g. Chin dandruff… II. Flip the concept You want something fresh, that you’ve never seen or heard before. It’s probably worded badly now, so get it to where it makes you snicker every time you read it. You want lines to have an attitude about them. The cleverness of a line is just as important as the delivery of the cleverness. Occasionally all it needs is a few adjectives here and there. Make sure it ends in something you can rhyme off of. e.g. Five days out of the week his face is covered in chin dandruff… III. Get a relating idea for your setup Don’t just throw a bunch of rhyming multis in the setup. Think of something that will actually set the punch up so it hits harder. It should add to the punch with adjectives e.g. All the winters thrown at it, his skin’s pale… Five days out of the week it’s covered in chin dandruff… IV. Apply your basic rhyme scheme Decide whether to switch-up the rhyme scheme and go with that. Note that it shows skill to create relevant-to-the-punch rhymes, and it also opens up the rest of the line for adjectives and extra imagery. Make sure all the rhymes are crisp, and try to avoid adding sirnames on the ends of rhymes. e.g. With all the winter its been handed, his skin’s famished… Five days out of the week it’s covered in chin dandruff… V. Flow Troubleshooting If you want a more fluid bar… 1. Look up the non-rhyming words in a thesaurus. You’ll be looking for synonyms that compound off other sounds in the punchline, you’d be surprised how often that works. If you write in Word, then it’s Shift-F7. 2. Rewrite the setup with inners compounded off the punch. You can rhyme setup or just pull random sounds out, works fine either way. Make sure you don’t stretch the bar by adding the inners, though. 3. Count the syllables in the lines. There isn’t a given magic number, but if the syllables are way off, the bar will pull you off beat, and that’s a problem. If you had trouble applying the rhyme scheme… 1. Try adding a few words to the end of the punch. This will give you something else to multi off of without destroying the punch. It’s give and take, though; if you can’t spare two words then don’t add them on. 2. Try a simple end of bar scheme and spice up the bar with a couple inners. If that doesn’t work, then flip the punch around to where something else ends it that you can rhyme with. If it took all of the sting out of it to do that, just save the concept for a rainy day. e.g. With all the winter its been handed, his skin’s famished… Most of the week it’s underneath a blizzard of chin dandruff… VI. Make sure the line fits into the verse well, it may need transitional rhymes to help it fit in right. Give everything a once over, and go to the next concept. Rewording a Punch Before: Most of the week it’s underneath a blizzard of chin dandruff… After: Thought I found his ghost… …till I rubbed off his chin dandruff powder coat I don’t know what it is, but whenever I finish a bar I always think of a flip that seems doper in my head. Strip the line back down and re-flip the concept. If you can’t re-flip or re-word it right, you should scrap the concept or save it for later. Don’t naturally assume anything can’t be worded correctly, but some things just can’t. Once again, try to keep everything fresh. If it seems like you’ve seen something like that before, so have other people. Rewording a Couplet Before: With all the winter its been handed, his skin’s famished… Most of the week it’s underneath a blizzard of chin dandruff… After: Looked just like him from head down to toe… Thought I found his ghost… …till I rubbed off his chin dandruff powder coat The first one has a better rhyme scheme, but the second has a lot more personality to it. The first one tried to make a serious imagery connection, while the second still uses imagery but in a clowning fashion. It also leads up to the punch a bit better. Everything is still relevant but the punch isn’t given away until you read it. It’s personal preference I suppose, but a little flow can easily be sacrificed for a stronger punch in a battle. Quick once-over to make sure it fits, then on to the next concept. Class dismissed.
