Snoop Dogg: Doggystyle

Synopsis: Long Beach, California's Snoop Doggy Dogg made one of the most successful debuts in rap music with DOGGYSTYLE. Introduced on the Dr. Dre single "Deep Cover," Snoop gained further popularity with his smoothed-out gangsta-type flow on Dre's THE CHRONIC. His music has ruled the clubs and the airwaves ever since, and the fact that his Dr. Dre-directed video "Murder Was The Case" was extended into an 18-minute feature-length film with its own soundtrack is further proof of just how much pull Snoop has in the hip-hop nation.

Snoop Dogg: The Doggfather

Synopsis: Although he still sips gin & juice, Snoop Doggy Dogg shows a more conservative style in his lyrics on this follow-up to the popular and controversial DOGGYSTYLE. He has a lot more positivity to express, and a lot less to say about G's and ho's. Otherwise it's the same ol' Snoop, representing the same G-funk that made him the West Coast's most popular rapper, even though his original producer, Dr. Dre, is nowhere to be seen. Once again, he pays tribute to old-school hip-hop, this time with a remake of Biz Markie's "Vapors."

Snoop Dogg: The Last Meal

Synopsis: Though Ice-T is credited with creating gangsta rap, and the original N.W.A. brought it to the forefront of the pop culture, it was Snoop Dogg that took the genre to the next level with his debut album DOGGYSTYLE. Snoop's decision to transfer from the Suge Knight-owned Death Row Records to the Master P-owned No Limit had a significant effect on the sound of his music. However, his fifth album, THA LAST MEAL, returns Snoop to the funk-inspired sound that made his debut a classic. Snoop Dogg: Paid Tha Cost To Be The Boss

Synopsis: On PAID THA COST, Snoop Dogg delivers plenty of the kind of visceral, sensuous, West Coast G-Funk that we've come to love him for. The most blatant example is "Stoplight," which samples and nods to P-Funk's ubiquitous "Flashlight," but somehow ends up sounding more like vintage Rick James gone hip-hop. Though his vintage beats and loopy sense of humor complement that sound perfectly, he doesn't leave things at that. The honey-sweet vocals of LaToiya Williams lend a melodic, slow-jam R&B flavor to the mellow "I Believe in You." A love song from Snoop? Believe it. "Ballin'" features the old-school vocal-harmony soul that's always been close to Snoop's heart, courtesy of the Dramatics. "From tha Chuuuch to Da Palace" ups the humor ante by including a lascivious adaptation of "Buffalo Gals." What's curious is that the already laid-back Snoop often seems to retreat from the spotlight on this album, letting the production and special touches occupy the forefront. Perhaps it's just that he's already proven himself so thoroughly that he's ready to go where no rapper has gone before--egolessness.
