Guilty Gear XX: Accent Core Reviewed.

General: Just when you thought the Guilty Gear series was ready for a "real" sequel, along comes another "GGXX" installment... *sigh* ... The Guilty Gear "X" series refuses to throw in the towel, and hasn't changed a whole lot, but seems to be improving with each title, so I'm not really complaining. I'm not a serious Guilty Gear player but I'm sure those die-hards that are, are enjoying this latest enhancement of practically the same game. That is, If they haven't already played Guilty Gear XX Slash, because it's nearly the same game at face value.

The main change in Accent Core is the new "Force Break," which consumes 25% of the Tension bar when used. Most characters have also gained new special moves, and some have had existing specials (or powered-up versions of existing specials) converted into Force Break attacks. There are now certain moves that make opponents stick briefly to walls or slide across the floor of a stage as well. New additions also include Slashback, a form of parrying with reduced block stun, and throw breaks.

Character voice acting has been completely re-done this time around, nice change if you thought those special moves and win quotes were starting to sound a bit monotonous (I did), and I personally think the new voices are quite badass and an improvement over the classic ones! The announcer voice is also different, but he unfortunately isn't quite as badass... He soundssuper-happy and quite franky, annoys me very much. They should have stuck with the old one I think.

There have also been some improvements with the animation, and the game as a whole appears a bit smoother in some places... The new hit animations are nice! The new backgrounds look awesome with 2 new BGM's that rock hard! The intro and character artwork in Accent Core are brand new, although the "character faces" from the selection screen were taken from GGXX, but isn't a bad thing since those artworks are definitely still very cool looking. This game also looks great on an HDTV, just pop it in your PS3!

GGXX: Accent Core unfortunately includes NO Story Mode, so this is purely an arcade fighting title made for the true Guilty Gear players... Arcade Mode, Medal of Millionare, Survival, Training, and Versus Mode should be enough to keep you guys busy. The back of the box claims to feature 2 new characters, but actually there aren't any completely "new" characters... A.B.A. is playable in a 1 vs 1 Guilty Gear title for the first time in America, with new moves to boot; and an alternate version of Sol Badguy, "Order Sol," is the other newcomer, and has a completely different move set than the original Sol.

Closing Comment: GGXX: Accent Core includes some nice updates to the gameplay, look, and presentation of the series. It's definitely one of the best looking of the series thus far... You should know by now if the Guilty Gear series suits your fighting game tastes. The gameplay is faster and more frantic than ever, with some of the most insane special moves and combos you may ever see in a fighting game. Overall, you're looking at a solid 2D fighter...
