Bungie Confirms: Halo 3 Doesn't Run Natively in HD

Earlier this week, a Beyond3D user claimed to have discovered that Halo 3 doesn't run natively in high definition. Using his HDTV's 1:1 mapping function, he discovered that Halo 3's vertical resolution was only 640; that's 80 pixels less than the lowest HD resolution, which is 720p (1280x720).

The latest Bungie Weekly Update has Luke Smith confessing that in fact, Halo 3 doesn't run natively at 720p like all other Xbox 360 games:

Halo 3 uses not one, but two frame buffers – both of which render at 1152x640 pixels. The reason we chose this slightly unorthodox resolution and this very complex use of two buffers is simple enough to see – lighting. We wanted to preserve as much dynamic range as possible – so we use one for the high dynamic range and one for the low dynamic range values. Both are combined to create the finished on screen image.

It's still HD, it's just not native 720p. There are other games that "cheat" using this function (Project Gotham 3, and Call Of Duty 2 just to name a few games).

ok so what is it? and either way for a non hd dvd that shit looks good.. can u imagine if they had dual hd dvds or dual blu ray's to make the game in... i bet that the next xbox console will have some crazy shit like that.. and maybe they'll drop another master chief or another halo related fps..

The format isn't what makes the games look good. It's all about developer ingenuity. The reason why movies look better on Blu Ray or HD DVD is for the simple fact that it's broadcasted in a way higher resolution, and takes a lot more space. HD DVD and Bluray have that space. Don't get shit twisted though. There is one movie that comes to mind that is in 1080p AND it's on a regular DVD (Terminator 2: Extreme Edition).
