New Ratchet bugged?

GR staffer reports a black screen and game freeze in today's new PS3 release
Could there be a problem with the biggest PS3 game of the year, Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction? GR Global Editorial Director Stephen Pierce has this to say:

"Last night I was playing a box fresh Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction on a box fresh PS3. The console was purchased on Saturday from Virgin. The final boxed copy of the game was sent to the GR office early last week."

"I had got to the Planet Mukow, about four or five planets into the game. I completed the first Arena Challenge in the Imperial Fight Festival and headed back to my spacecraft to fly to another planet. I pressed the triangle button to enter the craft and the screen went black and some numbers appeared in the top left hand corner. The game froze."

"I reloaded and attempted to leave the planet a further four times and the same thing happened each time. I don't know if I've got a defective machine, copy of the game, or what?"

GR will investigate further, but anyone else having trouble with Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction please let us know and reply.

The Fix

For those of us eager to get some platforming action joy with Insomniac Games' latest next-gen masterpiece on the Sony PlayStation 3, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, you may have encountered a glitch that stops the fun dead in its tracks. Thankfully, a workaround has been provided by none other than Insomniac Games itself through the company's own community manager James Stevenson.

So what causes the video gaming happy to suddenly cease and desist? James Stevenson explains that like Resistance: Fall of Man, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction needs to install a few files into your hard drive for the game to actually run. Here's where things start getting a little dicey: even though you've got loads of free space on your hard drive, the game could read your hard drive as full, and therefore refuse to install. Ouch.

What's the workaround, then? It's really a simple procedure. James advises that to make the problem go away, all players need to do is either free up 500 megabytes' worth of space, or download 500 megabytes worth of data from the PlayStation Network Store. Yes, we know, it's weird, having to fill up your hard drive just so a game can detect all the loads of free space available, but if it lets us play something as good as Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, then fill up we must.

Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction released this week, but some users are finding that they cannot start the game. The bug causes the game to think that the hard-drive is full when it attempts to install the game files.

Thankfully, the fix is easy and Insomniac says that adding or removing 500mb of data from the hard-drive.

So delete some demos or movies or download some new ones. 500mb should allow the game to install and play properly.
