Default Another possible nail in Sony's [Bluray] coffin

http://www.sgknox.com/2007/01/11/no-porn-on-blu-ray/

Quote:
Has Sony gone mad? Prominent adult movie producer Digital Playground (site) says it is forced to use HD DVD instead of Blu-ray, because Sony does not allow XXX-rated movies to be released on Blu-ray.

It does not matter how you stand to porn. It is here and it is a massive business. It is also an industry that is an early adopter for new media technology. VHS might not have won with out the adult film industry adopting it.

German Heise has interviewed Joone the founder of Digital Playgrounds at the AVN 2007 show in Las Vegas. Joone says actually said last year he is committed to Blu-ray. Now they announced four HD DVD titles in the United States. In the interview Joone says he was forced to use HD DVD, because no Blu-ray disc manufacturer would make his discs, because Sony was against it and they would loose their license.

If this holds true, Blu-ray is at a major disadvantage and could fail.
It is speculated that Sony lost the VHS/Betamax war because of the porn industry backing up VHS. I can see the same thing happening here. The porn industry seriously brings in a shitload of revenue, and even though Sony has companies like Sony, Columbia, Fox, and Walt Disney backing them up, HD-DVD now has the entire porn industry on lock.

Like I said, ggpo to the Bluray, which in turn will probably lead to a premature death to the PS3.

Well back in the VHS/Beta days there was no internet (well at least not as common as now). I'm sure a LOT of people download porn off the net, legally or not. This is a big difference from back then, HD-DVD also lost Universal which was there main studio support, so Blu-Ray has a lot more movies coming out.

Uhhh, regardless of internet, they still pull in a shitload of revenue, not to mention porn in HD is pretty damn hard to find as well.

Since when did Universal ever decide to give bluray support?

You know they are the main people that are dissing Bluray to hell?

http://www.betanews.com/article/Univ...ray/1158616603

The news is a little old, but it's pretty strong words coming from the execs at Universal Studios.

Also you can go on the main website, and see they aren't even remotely supporting it.

http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/movies.php?studioid=8

You can even go to the Coming Soon section and you won't see a single movie by Unversal Studios on there.

Yeah Blu-Ray messed up not getting a contract with porn but hopefully it'll stay alive and be a main format in the future.

Like I said, you can go check the entire year for the "Coming Soon" section on Blu-Ray.com and you won't see a single movie by Universal Studios on there.

I see it on CDJapan, but I'm more than sure that it's probably a mistake on their part, because it's not on Amazon, nor is it on any of the major retail websites here either.

Blu-ray Refutes Claims of Porn Ban; Vivid Plans First High-Def Release

http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/news...ef_Release/437

Quote:
The Blu-ray Disc Association is speaking out against charges that the org is shunning adult video distributors from releasing content on Blu-ray.

As we reported last week, the co-founder of porn distributor Digital Playground says that his company was forced to change HD allegiances after "all Blu-ray Disc copying facilities in the United States had refused to cooperate." He went on to allege that primary Blu-ray backer Sony "wants me to publish my films on HD DVD."

Without responding directly to Digital Playground's claims, Marty Gordon, vicechair of the Blu-ray Disc Association US Promotions Committee emphasized in a statement to Ars Technica that the Sony-backed organization is committed to working with "all" content providers.

"The BDA welcomes the participation of all companies interested in using and supporting the format, particularly those from the content industry," said the BDA's Gordon. "We look forward to working with any content providers interested in providing their audience with [the] best possible high definition home entertainment experience."

And indeed, as recently as last Friday, plans appeared to still be on the table for a Blu-ray (and HD DVD) release of 'Debbie Does Dallas... Again,' the first film from industry giant Vivid Entertainment to be released on high-def. (We first reported on Vivid's plans to support both high-def formats last October.)

Analysts say that the pornography industry, which generates an estimated $57 billion in annual revenue worldwide, could play an influential role in increasing high-def adaption rates and -- especially if forced to choose sides -- could help determine an ultimate victor in the high-def format wars.

Ahh, good to hear an official response...commence enjoying your porn in Blu-ray HD you porn fans!
