GRASS VALLEY, CA - Citing increased fire dangers leading up to the July Fourth holiday, Grass Valley city leaders announced the suspension of all fireworks sales Friday, Grass Valley fire officials said.
Grass Valley Fire Chief Jim Marquis said National Weather Service forecasts indicating a high probability for more lightning-caused fires over the next three days prompted the decision. "Even a small incident from accidental or illegal fireworks poses a public safety threat that is unacceptable at this time," Marquis said. In accordance with state law, fireworks stands had been scheduled to open for business at noon Saturday. "This is a very difficult decision due to its impact on non-profit organizations that depend on fireworks sales for their income," Grass Valley city adminstrator Dan Holler said. "However, based on the information we have and the city's highest priority being public safety, it was the right decision." Before Friday's decision, Grass Valley had been the only city in western Nevada County that allowed the sale of state-approved fireworks over the Independence Day holiday. Marquis said the city was also seeking an emergency ordinance to prohibit all fireworks use within city limits over the summer holiday season.
