July 4th's Top 10 Patriots
![]() Here at RGF, I'm nothing if not patriotic. That's why, this July 4th Independence Day Hullabaloo, I decided to step into my mind and think about some of the great patriots of all time. After all, you wouldn't be at home, choking down hot dogs and watching Top Chef reruns if it weren't for some amazing men of patriotic cloth. So, here they are. 10. Patrick Henry - Dude would rather have had death than liberty. We can't think of anyone who would sacrifice their iPhone for liberty these days, so you have to give it to him. 9. Samuel Adams - One of the greats. Not only does he have a line of beers named after him, but was one of the original framers of the Declaration of Independence, one of the rabble-rousers at the Boston Tea Party, and has statues all over Boston in his name. 8. Alexander Hamilton - Not only was one of the first patriots of all time, but got into a duel with the Vice President. A real pistol duel! Over ideology! Also, the very first Secretary of the Treasury. 7. John Ashcroft - "Let the Eagle Soar" - nuff said. 6. Henry Clay - One of the founders of the American Whig Party. Not only is it fun to say, but the Whigs were kind of into building new railroads and opening banks and stuff. Very patriotic...especially for the early 1800's. 5. Thomas Jefferson - Or, "The Jeff." 4. George W. Bush - According to the definition of "patriot," "a person who regards himself or herself as a defender, esp. of individual rights, against presumed interference by the federal government," George Bush might well be the ultimate patriot. He neither cares nor pretends to care about anyone's interests but his own, especially when he thinks he's defending the country! 3. Captain America - Steve Rodgers was one of the greats. He will be missed, but at least Stephen Colbert (Honorable Mention) still has the shield. 2. Abraham Lincoln - Freed the slaves. Shepherded the Civil War. Wore AWESOME hats. You got to give it to this guy on the patriot front. He practically invented it. "Honest Abe," indeed. 1. Tom Brady - Seriously, was there any doubt? He has three rings, and is nowhere near retirement. We would be willing to bet you a dozen Dunkin Donuts that, if you were to ask any Bostonian who their favorite Patriot is, Tom Brady would win out over 80% of the time. And that's something. There you have it. Hope you enjoyed it. Happy 4th of July! |
