'Sorry, I don't cut Asian hair'

AN Asian teenager was turned away from a barber’s — for having the wrong type of hair.

Sammy Roy wanted a quick trim but was told by the hairdresser that he only did “European” barnets.

The 18-year-old was so shocked he stormed out. He told The Sun: “I went in and I didn’t even say what haircut I wanted.

“I sat down and waited and the barber looked at me and said, ‘I only do European hair.’

“I only wanted it doing with the clippers. I was upset all day.”

Sammy, whose dad hails from Papua New Guinea and mum is from Thailand, has lived in York for seven years.

He has never had trouble getting a haircut — until his visit to local barber shop Skinny Sams.

Dad John, 65, said: “Sammy’s hair is the same as European hair, really.

“If there’s a problem with cutting the hair of people from South-East Asia, this guy shouldn’t be let loose in a barber’s. There’s thousands of Asian people in York and they all need their hair cut.”

Barber Sam Atkinson, manager of the shop, defended his decision, saying: “There is a difference between European and Asian hair, and it involves different training.

“It has nothing to do with where the person is from. With hindsight, perhaps I should have explained things to the customer, but I was very busy at the time he came in.”

Salon owner Lawton Henry added: “Sam is only trained in cutting European hair but we do offer a service for any nationality in our sister salons.

to be racist involves power

power to put another in a cage, power to give someone a job, power to take someones human rights
