MediaDefender is a company whose sole purpose is to disrupted peer-to-peer downloading sites. They are hired by entertainment firms to seed bittorrent sites and limewire with fake files and other detritus to make piracy harder. And they were hacked this weekend.
A group called MediaDefender-Defenders broke into their systems and forwarded lots of email to the internet about what the somewhat secretive security company does behind closed doors. "by releasing these e-mails we hope to secure the privacy and personal integrity of all peer-to-peer users," the group said. The juiciest revelation was that the company discussed building a website (wiivii.com) that would have told surfers they were downloading movies and music and really they were having their personal info taken and, perhaps, legal action taken against them. We have serious doubts about an internet security company that can't hold onto their own information, know what I mean? Read the whole story below.
