i made a sphere- takes time to learn how to pivot and move things - also how to render and add effects - lheck out the add ons for it -they have particle and texturing really its a nice software.

ive downloaded loads of materials but have no idea how to install and actually use them. any ideas?

Alot of those C4D renders can also be made in a program called Bryce

try working with the material/textures or whatever u call em, and the lighting

those seem to be the two biggest things that make it look "polished"
