Ya'll remember the big hype around the GT-R getting a 7:38 around the N'Ring right? It stirred a bunch of controversy with Z06 and 911 owners around the world and they doubted that a 3900 lb car could make such an achievement. Guess what, folks?

Fast Times: Nissan GT-R Sets New Nurburgring Record
CASCAIS, Portugal — Carlos Ghosn, Nissan president and CEO, announced today that at Germany's famed Nürburgring, on April 16-17, 2008, a production Nissan GT-R achieved a lap time of 7 minutes, 29 seconds, making it the fastest production car ever to lap the Nürburgring circuit. (Earlier, a GT-R posted a 7-minute, 38-second lap time, establishing it as one of the world's fastest production cars.)

Previously, according to Ghosn, the Porsche GT2 and the Porsche Carrera achieved 7-minute 32-second lap times at the Nürburgring. Nissan's GT-R is now officially some 3 seconds quicker around the Nürburgring than Porsche.

In its first Super GT race at Japan's Suzuka Circuit, in March 2008, the GT-R finished 1st and 2nd.

"This car shows that Nissan is capable of bringing great technology to market, against anyone, in any niche," said Ghosn.

The all-wheel-drive GT-R, Nissan's technological flagship, is powered by a 480-horsepower, twin-turbo V6. It has a coefficient of drag of just 0.27. Built on Nissan's Premium Mid-ship platform, it features die-cast aluminum, steel and carbon-fiber construction. The brakes are Brembo monoblock multipiston calipers with 15-inch floating, drilled and ventilated disc brakes. Driver-adjustable shocks, gear-shift speed and VDC-R stability control are included, along with a dual-clutch six-speed paddle shift gearbox (transaxle) with quick shifts or full automatic operation.

The base Nissan GT-R will be priced at $69,850 when it goes on sale in the U.S. at selected Nissan dealers in June 2008.

Edit- Then again, the doubtful part of my mind tells me Ghosn could've misinformed us by accidentally leaving out "Spec V" in his statement, but until he corrects himself every automobile website/magazine will be posting the base GT-R as the N'Ring king.

that is the spec V, nissan made this move after porsche got shitty and let modified version o there gt2 (or was i gt2? anyways) out on the track......

GT-R Achieves Under 7:30 at Nurburgring

Nissan today announced that its GT-R supercar achieved a lap time at the infamous Nurburgring in Germany of seven minutes and 29 seconds. Recorded on April 16 and 17, the GT-R used was a base specification car and fitted with the standard Japanese market tires. Driven by GT-R chief test driver Tochio Suzuki, this latest lap time beats the previous fastest time for the GT-R by nine seconds.

The previous best lap time for GT-R of 7:38, also driven by Suzuki, was one of the fastest laps achieved by a production car despite conditions being slightly damp on two corners.

"At last year's testing, we were frustrated by the conditions at the Nurburgring, always believing that the GT-R could go under seven minutes 30 seconds," said Kazutoshi Mizuno, Chief Vehicle Engineer for GT-R. "Below seven minutes 30 seconds, the GT-R proves it is among the fastest mass-production cars in the world. We set out to build a multi-performance supercar accessible to anyone, anytime and anywhere - I believe the GT-R has delivered that promise."

Deliveries of the all-new GT-R began in Japan in December 2007. Sales in the US and Canada start in July and extend to Europe and other markets over the next 12 months.
