It all depends. Sealed hit cleaner, deeper bass. Ported hit a little bit harder and travel more. Specs are extremely important when buildin. The right wood, glue, nails, angles, etc.

Uhh, what the fuck, do you guys know fucking anything about subs?
First off, what you want to do is get a box built to specs. Not all boxes are good for ANY sub. The general rule of thumb is a sealed box will generally give you tighter bass, but the main downfall is definitely losing out on the lower frequencies (mainly anything below 35hz), and also because of the pressure in the box, you run the risk of bottoming out your sub. If you have the right ported box, it will sound perfect, you will generally hear lower frequencies, while still maintaining good sound quality, and because of the ported air, don't run such a high chance of bottoming out your sub. The main downside is it takes more ingenuity for building a nice ported box than a sealed box, and it takes more room up in your trunk. All sub boxes are usually made with 3/4" thick MDF, and should use liquid nails around the edges of the box so there is no air leakage. As for your sub, I say get rid of it, because Sony Xplods are like some of the shittiest subs of all time right next to the Funky Pups. |
