From anyone who knows about cars.....i got a 97 jeep grand cherokee, its in pretty good condition and i got a good deal on it when i bought it. Its got 145k on it. Im thinkin about tradin it to someone for a 98 vw jetta wit 145k on it. He wants a suv, i want a car, so it seems like were both in it to get what we want out of it. I like jettas, i always have. Jus wonderin if anyone can put some 2 cents in cuz im not that mechanically inclined....does it sound legit? What kind of problems does vw have for higher milage, as oppose to jeep high milage, also are vw parts crazy expensive bc there imports? I kno everythin i fixed on my jeep wasnt all that bad...

VW parts aren't that bad, especially for a Jetta...the problem with mid/late 90s jettas is that they are hit/miss for quality. Some go strong, others a lemons. DO NOT allow this trade to go down until you get the car checked by a licensed mechanic. If everything checks out, definitely go for the trade

What he said, but a little bit more. Most European cars are shaky near 100K but only without a warranty. I would suggest looking elsewhere first and trying to get one with a warranty. Paying a tad extra for a warranty will go a long way if you plan on keeping it stock and for a while.
Most Audis had problems in the 90s with reliability, I don't see how their parent-company VW would be much different. Still, drive it around for a bit, see how it is, then get someone good to take a look at it and then decide. Although...if your Jeep had no problems for the time you owned it, the Jetta may be a safe bet. American cars were built shittily, although the are improving now, Jeeps were pretty expensive to repair as well. You got pics? And what's your price range in case we can make more suggestions.

VW/Audi's have an interesting quality issue and they can be really expensive to repair when shit goes awry. Personally, I would not do the trade without having the car checked out first and getting the opportunity to drive it. VW parts are affordable. They can be found almost anywhere. This includes engines and transmissions as well as other random bits.
