Default Here Come the Super-Stadiums

New Meadowlands Stadium (Naming Rights TBD)

East Rutherford, N.J.

New York Jets/New York Giants, NFL
Cost: $1.3 billion
Capacity: 82,500
Opens: 2010
Luxury suites/other amenities: 200 luxury suites; 9,200 club seats; four 40-foot-by-130-foot video scoreboards

Plan for a Manhattan-based Jets stadium fell through, compelling the team to seek a joint venture with the Giants that will keep the stadium-sharing partnership alive in New Jersey. The new stadium's signature will be a 400-feet-by-40-feet high rectangular wall featuring murals of players to fans outside the stadium.

Yankee Stadium

Bronx, N.Y.

New York Yankees, MLB
Cost: $1.3 billion
Capacity: 51,800
Opens: 2009
Luxury suites/other amenities: 67 total suites. Most expensive Legends Suite is $2,500 a game per person and must be purchased in three- to 10-year packages; other suites cost $650,000 to $800,000 a year.

Design will be true to original Yankee Stadium built in 1923. The team swears up and down the high prices for primo suites will subsidize Joe Fan sitting upstairs, where 24,000 seats will be under $45.

Dallas Cowboys New Stadium (Naming Rights TBD)

Arlington, Texas

Dallas Cowboys, NFL
Cost: $1 billion
Capacity: 80,000
Opens: 2009
Luxury suites/other amenities: 200 suites; 1,500 club seats; eight video boards; 286 concessionaires

Club seat customers will see the players walk right past on their way to the field. Regular tickets will go for as much as $340, while seat license prices range from $16,000 to $50,000.

Lucas Stadium

Indianapolis, Ind.

Indianapolis Colts, NFL
Cost: $625 million
Capacity: 63,000
Opens: 2008
Luxury suites/other amenities: 140 to 150 suites; three scoreboards each 97-foot-by-53-foot, among the league's largest.

Indianapolis hopes the new digs will help it draw the 2012 Super Bowl. A brick and glass facade on outside helps it blend in--no futuristic look here.

Citi Field

Flushing, N.Y.

New York Mets, MLB
Cost: $600 million
Capacity: 45,000
Opens: 2009
Luxury suites/other amenities: 58 luxury boxes; 7,800 club seats

The Mets get $20 million annually for 20 years from Citigroup. The exterior and rotunda will resemble Ebbets Field, where the team's National League forbearers, the Brooklyn Dodgers, played from 1913 to 1957.

Beijing, China

Cost: $500 million

The stadium will host track and field events, as well as the opening and closing ceremonies. Following the games, expect Beijing to have an expensive white elephant on its hands.

Pittsburgh Hockey Arena (Naming Rights TBA)

Pittsburgh, Pa.

Pittsburgh Penguins, NHL
Cost: $300 million
Capacity: 18,500

Quote:
Forget the bum economy. Hungering for the kind of revenue needed to field top teams, a wave of stadium construction is sweeping through sports. But not just any stadiums. Super-stadiums.

The formula: Build new facilities with fewer seats and more luxury boxes, charge higher prices, earn more revenue, hire better players and reap more wins. Then turn around and raise ticket prices. It’s a sports business model that originated in America and is now spreading across the globe. “It’s become a game of one-upsmanship,” says Chris Lee, senior principal at HOK Sport, which designed several new European stadiums. “Teams are finding it’s a circle you have to be a part of.”
charge higher prices..
