Default Flop = Fine next Season in NBA

The NBA announced to its teams this week at its annual pre-draft camp that fines will be imposed on players starting next season for clear cases of "flopping," ESPN.com has learned.

The league office has yet to determine exact fine amounts for offending flops and how fines might escalate for repeat offenders, but in-game arena observers and video reviewers will be instructed to report instances of theatrical flopping for potential punishment as part of postgame reports on officiating and other matters.

The league's pledge to crack down on flopping was conveyed to team representatives at Tuesday's competition committee meeting in Orlando.

NBA executive vice president of basketball operations Stu Jackson confirmed the new policy Wednesday night saying: "What was clearly expressed to the committee is that we would begin imposing fines next season for the most egregious type of flops. When players are taking a dive, for lack of a better term."

The Cavs' Anderson Varejao, left, may be fined next season if his actions are found to be a clear case of flopping.
Because a precise penalty system has not yet been structured, it is not yet known whether serial floppers will be subject to possible suspensions after a certain number of fines for flopping, as seen with the league's protocol on technical fouls. Players who accrue 16 technicals during the regular season are hit with a one-game suspension when they get to No. 16 -- the limit is seven technicals during the playoffs -- and receive one-game suspensions for every other technical thereafter (No. 18, 20, etc.).

About time something has been done about all the flopping going on. I know you have to sell the foul, but that shit gets ridiculous sometimes....

Yea Manu and Varejo come to mind first off. But I wonder if superstars will get special treatment with this like they do with fouls. I mean through the season/playoffs the likes of a Kobe or Lebron do there fair share off flopping as well. I wonder if they will get the benefit of the doubt that they really did get fouled and didn't flop. It will be interesting to see how this works out.

can we agree that the next problem that should be adressed is the timeouts...it takes momentum out of the game when the final 20sec. takes 15min. I don't know a solution but it would be nice to see the game go more smoothly without those long breaks

^^True I hate that shit. Hell I even hate the foul every single time they touch it in the last few seconds. It is annoying for them to call time out, score, foul, get ball back, timeout, and so on and so on.

Another one is that fouling shit before the last 2 minutes of the quarter and game. I remember the "hack-a-shaq" back with Don Nelson on the Mavs, but Greg Poppavich took that shit to a whole new level in these playoffs against the Suns. I lost some respect for him as a coach with him doing that shit almost every time down the court. To me in MY OPINION that shit is cheap and a lame way to play the game. It was like he felt they couldn't beat the Suns without doing that shit and playing straight up. They definitely need to change the rules from letting you do that on consecutive trips down the court throughout the game whenever you want.

They flop cuz fouls today arent what they were in the 90s and 80s. They was playing football on the basketball court when the pistons was playing.

I doubt this will be in effect for long. What ever happened to the NBA no tolerance policy against whining over fouls and shit to the refs? I see kobe bitchin throwing his tantrums down the court still and no tech being called.
