The Bulls expect to introduce Vinny Del Negro at a news conference either Tuesday or Wednesday. The Sun-Times was the first to report Friday that Del Negro, 41, had interviewed for the job last week, when it was becoming clear that Bulls chairman Jerry Reinsdorf was backing away from hiring Doug Collins.
Del Negro, currently the assistant general manager of the Phoenix Suns, has no previous coaching experience. He, however, apparently impressed Bulls GM John Paxson and chairman Jerry Reinsdorf enough during interviews Thursday and Friday to edge out former Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Dwane Casey and Sacramento Kings assistant Chuck Person, who were the other finalists for the job. Del Negro interviewed with Phoenix GM Steve Kerr for the Suns' head-coaching vacancy after Mike D’Antoni left to become the New York Knicks bench boss on May 10. But Kerr said he wanted someone with head coaching experience and hired former Bucks coach Terry Porter on Saturday. Kerr said he would consider making Del Negro an assistant coach. Some close to the Suns say Del Negro was as upset as anyone at how D’Antoni coached last season and was critical that D’Antoni played an eight-man rotation and did not develop the younger players Del Negro had helped add to the roster as first a scout and then assistant GM. Del Negro told the Arizona Republic that interviewing for the Suns head coaching job had "opened my eyes to the passion I have for coaching," and the idea of coaching ``has always been tugging at me." Del Negro was the Suns radio analyst before moving to the team’s front office as a scout in 2006. Del Negro played 11 years in the NBA and averaged 9.1 points and 3.2 assists. The former point guard will help the Bulls decide between point guard Derrick Rose and forward Michael Beasley for the first pick of the June 26 draft. At first i thought this was a bad move but now looking at it, it seems like a good move. Mixing a young likeable coach with young players could be a good thing for Chicago. |
