The Yankees left Toronto as victors. But that might be slim comfort as the team's biggest star heads out with his reputation in tatters after an on-field incident last night everyone connected with the Jays say is a first in their experience.

With two out in the ninth and the Yankees on their way to a 10-5 win, Jorge Posada launched a sky-high pop-up. As substitute Jays third baseman Howie Clark settled under the ball, Alex Rodriguez ran past him on the basepath. Video replays clearly showed Rodriguez yelling something that was variously described by Jays on the field at the time as "Mine!" or "I got it!"

Clark thought he was being called off by shortstop John McDonald. So he stepped out of the way and it fell in as another run scored.

"I was under the fly ball and I thought I was called off ... and I let it drop. I heard a `Mine!' call," Clark said.

Rodriguez admitted yelling, but denied calling for the ball. "I just said, `Ha!' ... that's it."

Asked if he said, `Mine' or `Got it,' Rodriguez said, "I would never say that, that's not true. Basically guys, I could care less (what the Jays think). They have their opinions and we're looking at not getting swept. It was nothing personal. But I couldn't care less. My (teammates) in here think it's good."

Rodriguez, earlier in the day, had to deal with a New York Post allegation that he had been spotted at a hotel and a Toronto strip club with a "mystery blonde." Rodriguez is married.
