CHICAGO – Plagued by three interceptions and three lost fumbles, the Bears fell from the ranks of the unbeaten and lost for the first time in 11 home games Sunday at Soldier Field. The opportunistic Dolphins scored all but 3 of their points off turnovers in stunning the Bears 31-13.
Robbie Gould’s 38-yard field goal gave the Bears a 3-0 lead with :04 left in the first quarter. Rex Grossman sustained the drive with completions to Desmond Clark for 7 yards on third-and-five and to Rashied Davis for 11 yards on third-and-five and 18 yards on third-and-eight. The Dolphins then stunned the Bears and silenced the crowd by turning two costly Chicago mistakes into two touchdowns in a :15 span early in the second quarter. Rookie Devin Hester muffed a punt at his own 6-yard line after calling a fair catch, and Miami’s Eddie Jackson recovered the loose ball. Three plays later, Joey Harrington’s 5-yard TD pass to former Bears receiver Marty Booker gave the Dolphins a 7-3 lead with 10:47 left in the first half. Booker tossed the ball to a young fan in the first row and blew kisses to the Soldier Field crowd as he jogged off the field. It was only the second time that the Bears have trailed at home this season and the first time since Seattle took a 3-0 lead Oct. 1 before Chicago rallied to win 37-6. On Chicago’s next snap, Grossman faked a handoff to Cedric Benson to the left, rolled to his right and threw the ball directly to defensive end Jason Taylor, who returned the interception 20 yards to increase Miami’s lead to 14-3 with 10:32 remaining in the second half. Grossman, the NFC Offensive Player of the Month for September, entered Sunday’s game having thrown 11 TD passes and no interceptions in four contests at home this season. Adrian Peterson then fumbled the ensuing kickoff, but Brendon Ayanbadejo averted disaster by scrambling to recover the ball at the Chicago 8. The Bears moved the ball to their own 42, but Taylor then sacked Grossman, forcing a fumble that was recovered by defensive end Kevin Carter at the 34. Ronnie Brown’s 24-yard reception gave Miami a first down at the 8, but Alex Brown intercepted Harrington’s pass intended for tight end Randy McMichael on third-and-goal from the five. The Bears capitalized on the turnover as Grossman lofted a 30-yard TD pass down the left sideline to Muhsin Muhammad, who beat cornerback Will Allen to draw the Bears to within 14-10 with 1:57 to play in the half. The TD was set up by Justin Gage’s 34-yard reception. Ronnie Brown’s rushes of 21 and 16 yards put Miami in position to extend its lead, but Israel Idonije deflected Olindo Mare’s 37-yard field goal attempt on the final play of the half. The Bears committed their fourth turnover of the game on the first play of the second half as safety Yeremiah Bell forced Gage to fumble after a 17-yard reception. Cornerback Andre Goodman scooped up the loose ball and returned it 33 yards to the Chicago 12, setting up Harrington’s 6-yard TD pass to Wes Welker that gave the Dolphins a 21-10 lead. The Bears advanced to the Miami 35, but Grossman was pressured while throwing to tight end Desmond Clark and safety Jason Allen intercepted the ball at the 28. The Bears got the ball back late in the third quarter on Nathan Vasher’s diving interception at the Miami 23. It was the first pick of the season for Vasher, whose team-leading eight interceptions last year tied for the third most in franchise history. After Grossman and Gage failed to connect on a third-and-seven pass, Gould’s 38-yard field goal cut the deficit to 21-13 with 1:02 left in the third quarter. But Grossman’s fourth interception of the game led to another Dolphins touchdown. Safety Renaldo Hill returned the pick 12 yards to the Chicago 24, setting up Harrington’s 24-yard TD pass to Chris Chambers on the next play that increased Miami’s lead to 28-13. Olindo Mare's 20-yard field goal with 1:13 left in the fourth quarter increased Miami's lead to 31-13. Now Aint That Some Shit?! FUCK HE MIAMI DOLPHINS ![]() ![]()
