Greater Manchester Police said that they do not believe that the stabbing was random. Wallwork, a former Manchester United player, is currently on loan to Barnsley from West Brom. The attack happened on Thursday not long after Wallworkarrived at the Whitworth Street West bar and nightclub, a favouritewith celebrities and footballers. He was with his girlfriend when the attack happened. Wallwork was given first aid by staff, before an ambulance arrived. He is now recovering in Manchester Royal Infirmary. The Sugar Lounge is a popular haunt for footballers and celebritiesA spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Police said: "The29-year-old was taken to hospital suffering stab wounds to his hand, stomach and back. It is not known what type of weapon was used. "Detectives believe this was not a random attack and are continuing to make enquiries to trace the offender." Wallwork came though the youth system at Manchester United and was sent to Carlisle, Stockport and Royal Antwerp on loan. However, his spell in Belgium was marred by controversywhen he was banned from football for life after he allegedly attacked areferee. That punishment was reduced on appeal to just a one-year sanction which related only to Belgium. Three years later, Wallwork joined West Brom on a free transfer after making 28 appearances for United. Although he was given a new two-year contract in August,he fell out of favour when new manager Tony Mowbray arrived and wasallowed to go out on loan to Barnsley. |
