They got the LaCie 500GB USB 2.0 FA Porsche Design External Hard Drive on sale for 139.99$ at FUTURE SHOP and the Western Digital 500GB My Book USB 2.0 Essential Edition External Hard Drive on sale for 159.99$ at STAPLES.
What should I lean too?

LaCie's are supposedly noisier, but they can't be that noisy and it's a better deal, IMO.

I'd personally go with Western Digital. With WD, you just plug it in and it works. With Lacie, I heard you have to actually install software on your pc and shit

i didn't install any software on my LaCie Big Disk, and the Western Digital installs software when you plug it in for the first time, Im sure it was the same deal with mine......but they are both reliable brands if you ask me......

i just got another wb 500 last weekend myself kinda pissed i didnt wait til this weekend though best buy and staples got them for 119 or u can get the one with firewire from best buy for 139 this week

firewire is just a different way to hook it up other than usb in case like me u dont have enough usb ports left. firewire is suppose to be a bit faster too for now til usb 3.0 comes out in a few years. see here's a picture of the different connections:
