![]() Toshiba is coming back for round 2 and they hope to take Blu-Ray on once again. This time, they are looking to undercut Sony's Blu-Ray format, by offering a player that will apparently reach the quality of Blu-Ray and HD-DVD discs. One report also claims that this new player will be able to upscale regular DVDs to higher qualities than we've seen, but doesn't explain how this is possible. It would have to be pretty revolutionary technology to create true high-def video from a standard DVD. The new format would supposedly play in standard DVD players, but look all nice and pretty in the new player. They hope to offer these new players for much less than Blu-Ray players, which they claim is the reason Blu-Ray hasn't been universally adopted. Toshiba's memory of HD-DVD seems to be gone because HD-DVD was cheaper than Blu-Ray and still failed. Also, we can't imagine movie studios are going to be jumping at the idea of getting back in bed with Toshiba after HD-DVD. All in all, don't expect this format to see the light of day. If it does, hopefully it'll go quickly and painlessly for Toshiba because from where we stand, they could lose a lot more money on this scheme. VNUnet: Toshiba unveils another Blu-ray 'killer' |
