The iPhone REQUIRES a data plan, the current iPhone's data plan is $20/month, in which you will receive UNLIMITED INTERNET DATA & 200 Text MSSGS. Since the 3G iPhone is.... 3G & the new prices are 199/299, they raised the data plan an extra $10, in which you will not be able to use the iPhone unless you pay an extra $30/month on top of your exisiting plan.
However, if I was you, I'd get the current iPhone, unlock it, so you won't need the data plan...

It's $30 a month, and is required by AT&T. It gives you unlimited 3G data(think of it as having unlimited minutes), meaning you can surf the web on the iPhone without ever being overcharged. It also gives you Visual Voicemail which lets you sort through/listen to voicemail messages without calling your voicemail. It could also be used for GPS. They make it look like it's required but I think you can cancel it after a month. I was able to cancel my BlackBerry $30 data plan after a couple months without a problem, so I think it should be the same with the iPhone since AT&T is treating it like any other smart phone now. |

Actually, The data plan for the iPhone is REQUIRED.. That is how AT&T makes the $$, let's say you buy an iPhone from an Apple Store, umm alright, but then how will AT&T will make $$? However, the data plan CAN be cancelled, but then you're iPhone wil just be a $400/500 ipod, not a phone. But due to JAILBREAKING, HACKING, an iPhone v1 can be activated without a data plan.
if anyone is planning on buying the 3g iphone, and don't want to pay the $30/month extra, hold off for 2-3 weeks untill it gets jailbroken, so that the $30/month data plan won't be necessary That's definitely something I am considering right now..

Recently ripped this dude off on craigslist for a 16gb for $350, that's damn good considering prices on ebay.

AT&T is treating the iPhone like any other phone now(subsidized price, same data plan prices as other phones), but the data plan is not as required as they want you to think. When I bought my BlackBerry last year, they told me that the $30 data plan was required no question about it. A couple months later, I figured I had no use for it since the browser sucks and I don't really need any other features. I called AT&T CS and told them I had no use for the data plan and want to remove it, and they did... no problem. The same thing will happen with the iPhone 3G -- they want you to think it's really required. Even the $20 data plan on the first iPhone was removable if you called them. Kinda surprised you can't figure this out. How will AT&T make money? Easy. Through voice plans. They make more than enough from that. Last edited by D3lta; 07-10-2008 at 02:21 AM.. |

You fucking idiot, you cannot use the iPhone unless it's activated, and to activate it, you have to use iTunes, which WILL add a data plan onto your iPhone before you start using it. However there is a way to get around it, Unlock/Jailbreak it.
BTW Data plans CAN be cancelled, there's no contract on them, but without unlocking/jailbreaking the iphone, you will never be able to use it. of course unless you talk to laid back cool ass at&t rep. BTW I currently have an iPhone 16GB, WITH NO DATA PLAN, it CAN be done. But it will not work for the 3G iPhone, UNLESS the 3G iPhone gets unlocked/jailbroken.
