well, go to intel's website (www.intel.com) select Core 2 Duo and take a look around... i would suggest the Core 2 Duo E8200 or anything above like the E8300, E8400 and E8500

Like blazed said, why not go with a Quad core processor?
I have an Intel Q6600 Quad core processor and I'm really impressed by it... Also, make sure you go with Intel... don't bother with AMD. Here is a list of Intel's current Dual core processors: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...ame=Core+2+Duo Quad core(if you're intrested): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...me=Core+2+Quad |

and back to the op you need to search for a motherboard also and probably memory. changing a processor just changing one thing.

I hate to burst your bubble but ever since Core 2 Duo AMD has been inferior to Intel, and is actually on the verge of bankruptcy. The only thing AMD is good for now is if you're on a budget, and they barely have that.

http://www.cpubenchmark.net/common_cpus.html Judging by that chart, the Q6600 is 600pts ahead of the Phenom 9500... Intel Q6600 released: Jan 2007 AMD 9500 released: Nov 2007 AMD had a whole 11 months to prep some killer CPU, and they failed... like I said OP, don't bother with AMD. Quote:

AMD are still good processors from what i've read just that intel have moved on quicker and better. sorry to jack the op thread lol but i don't really know that much about all this stuff, just what i occasionally read. Is the e8400 a good cpu for gaming? and iwhat good motherboard is out there that is compatible with this cou right out of the box, no need for bio update?

as of right now......dual core would be your best option, but quad-core if you would like to future-proof urself. There are hardly any programs out there that will take advantage of all 4 cores, at the most they will use 2, and then again not all programs take advantage of 2 cores, although most do.
