if your player plays the video but the image is all black you need to install DivX codecs. just google it

GOM Media Player, plays almost every file except RM, but you can get codecs for that...

just download FFDShow. Install it and voilá! It's done, you can play .avi files on windows media player

i use vlc and miro. vlc plays dvds too and miro can also download torrents.
