Use VLC Media Player
Then while the video's playing, right click somewhere on the video and click "Snapshot", then paste it into Paint or w/e you want

This player freezes up every time I snapshot anyone got any other methods?

there's an option in Windows Media Player Classic to take screenshots I think.
I already made thumbnails so propably you can make snapshots too.
